I Got Myself In To A Real Pickle

Venturing in to the world of pickling.

The last few days have been such a gong show! Self-induced, of course.

I got it fixed in my mind that I was going to make dill pickles. Don't ask me why. I have never made pickles before. I didn't even own a canning pot!

Fortunately, Central Builders had canning pots on sale last week. I drove down there to pick one up. They were all sold out! That should have been my first clue that making dill pickles was not a good idea and I should just let it go. But, they called me the next morning to tell me some more pots had come in on the truck the night before.

West Coast Sounds of Carmanah

Tunes For Tuesday presents Carmanah.

What sounds come to mind when you think of the West Coast? The wind whistling through the ancient cedars? The cry of an eagle as it soars overhead? The unique tinkle of the ocean as it rushes in over the pebbles on the beach?

Aptly named, Carmanah manages to incorporate all these sounds and more in their music. The first time I heard Carmanah, I knew I was listening to something special. I slowly closed my eyes, leaned back in my chair, and I was transported.

Government In Negotiations With Mars Bombers

Now that they have blown through their $63 million budget (the cost of fighting fires in BC is already at $80 million), the government is in negotiations to bring back our beloved Mars Bombers.

Take That Sapsuckers!

Time to go on the offence.

The neighbourhood hummingbird has been coming by daily, sometimes several times per day to check on my honeysuckle vine. He is protecting his crop quite ferociously too, chasing away any interlopers.

The honeysuckle is loaded with buds this year! With all the glorious weather we have been having, I am expecting a burst of colour any day.

A couple of days ago I was watering the honeysuckle and was shocked to see it was absolutely infested with aphids! I have been in this home for four years and have never seen any aphids prior to now.

I Am Usually A Pacifist

The annual invasion of the deer has begun.

The annual invasion of deer has begun.

It was really a joy to have a vegetable garden the first year I was living in my home. I enjoyed the fruits of my labour and ate out of my garden from May to October. I had so much produce, more than I would need, so I was delivering a basket of produce every week to the soup kitchen.

Residential Power Solution

Tesla sets its sights on residential energy.

It would be safe to say that most of us are concerned about our environment. We all want to do our part to minimize our footprint on Mother Earth.

Solar power has proven to be an effective and sustainable method of generating power. But the cost to home owners to set up such a system is prohibitive. To store your own power requires a bank of expensive ugly batteries with limited life.
